Why should you choose to only plant native (or desert adapted) plants in your yard?
Nature has a perfect design and it's often wise we follow suit. The plants in the desert are here because they've learned to survive and adapt to the various conditions that the desert has to offer throughout the year. One of the most pivotal factors in maintaining plants in the desert is water. Something we don't have as much of as other places in the world. The animals and the plants here know how to conserve water, even during the hottest and driest months of the year. When we incorporate other flora and species, it takes a lot more energy, and water for them to survive. Taking more time and responsibility from us to maintain them and balance out the proper care they'd be receiving elsewhere naturally. As Arizona is starting to see more and more visitors move here from other areas of the U.S that aren't used to our environment. We are seeing a lot of improper care and plants being brought in from more humid, cooler places that cannot survive here. While it's understandable that residents from other climates are used to their former lifestyle and way of being, there is a major adjustment that needs to take place and we must accept the boundaries and limitations of our environment. We do things differently in Arizona, and for good reason. It's hot!
Planting native species is fundamental. They thrive in the desert with little to no care from us, they can handle the harsh elements, and after the unprecedented storms we've received, they came out on top in comparison to other plants who did not fair so well. As well, they promote the welfare of native wildlife and help maintain the eco-system with ease. Native planting combined with water harvesting is the most common sense thing you could do in our environment and is our main focus and specialty in landscape design and care. There is new beauty to behold in these native plants that hold wondrous discoveries.
